VOCO has introduced Profluorid Varnish + BioMin, a 5% sodium fluoride varnish that incorporates BioMin bioactive glass to provide additional calcium and phosphate ion release.
BioMin technology, developed at Queen Mary University of London in the United Kingdom, has previously been incorporated into bioactive toothpastes. In the presence of saliva, the bioactive glass dissolves and releases calcium and phosphate ions, which interact with fluoride to support remineralization.
According to VOCO, Profluorid Varnish + BioMin is also designed to help manage dentin hypersensitivity. The bioactive glass releases fine mineral particles that enter exposed dentinal tubules and promote the formation of fluorapatite, helping to occlude the tubules. Fluorapatite formation at the enamel surface is also intended to increase enamel hardness and resistance to acid challenges.
The formulation is based on VOCO’s pro-colophony varnish technology and is designed for application in a clear, thin layer. Ion release begins within the first 15 minutes after application and continues to increase during the first hour, according to the manufacturer.
Profluorid Varnish + BioMin is available in mint, caramel, bubble gum, and cherry flavors. Delivery options include multidose tubes and single-dose units.
