Dentsply Sirona has announced the release of the CEREC Cercon 4D™ Multidimensional Zirconia Abutment Block, which the company says is the first zirconia meso block to offer both high strength and esthetic performance for hybrid abutments and screw-retained crowns.
The company also introduced Calibra® Abutment Resin Cement, which was designed to support the cementation of these restorations.
According to Dentsply Sirona, the new block features proprietary 3D layering technology, including a dome-shaped dentin core with higher opacity and a more translucent enamel contour, aiming to replicate the natural tooth structure more closely than conventional horizontally layered zirconia blocks. The company states that the block achieves a flexural strength of over 1100 MPa and allows for a minimum wall thickness of 0.5 mm.
The material is manufactured from 4Y-zirconia and is designed for use in chairside workflows with the CEREC Primemill® and CEREC SpeedFire® systems. Dentsply Sirona reports that the total fabrication time—including milling and sintering—is under an hour for a screw-retained crown.
“CEREC Cercon 4D Multidimensional Zirconia Abutment Block is the world’s first highly esthetic CAD/CAM zirconia abutment block for implant restorations, constructed to mimic a natural tooth,” stated Arjan de Roy, Group Vice President of Essential Dental Solutions at Dentsply Sirona. “It is currently also the only zirconia abutment block that can be used for both hybrid abutments as well as hybrid abutment crowns. This special block enables dentists to achieve excellent chairside results for their implant patients with confidence.”
The Calibra Abutment Resin Cement, which debuts alongside the zirconia block, is intended for extraoral cementation. The company stated that the cement provides high bond strength, comes in an ultra-opaque shade to block underlying substrate color, and is formulated for compatibility with Ti-bases, even after disinfection and autoclaving.
The CEREC Cercon 4D block requires CEREC Software Version 5.2.11 or higher. Availability may vary by region due to regulatory timelines, the company noted.
