Align Technology has announced the addition of restorative capabilities to its next-generation iTero Lumina™ intraoral scanners and the new iTero Lumina™ Pro dental imaging system. These updates are designed to help general practitioners streamline diagnostic and restorative workflows, allowing them to manage complex cases and support efficient ortho-restorative treatments.
The enhanced iTero Lumina solutions include iTero Multi-Direct Capture™ technology, which offers a 3x larger field of view and a maximum capture distance of 25mm. These scanners are also designed to capture data up to 2x faster, facilitating quicker and more accurate scans, even in challenging areas such as dentures, palates, and edentulous spaces.
Karim Boussebaa, executive vice president and managing director of the iTero scanner and services business at Align Technology, stated, “We are excited to announce that the upgraded iTero Lumina™ scanner and new iTero Lumina™ Pro dental imaging system can now help doctors deliver exceptional restorative outcomes with the wave of a wand.” He also emphasized the improved 3D and 2D visualizations provided by the iTero Lumina™ solutions, which help clinicians better assess and communicate patients’ oral health.
Dr. Karla Soto, a general practitioner based in Boca Raton, Florida, praised the scanner’s performance for complex cases. “The iTero Lumina scanner excels in the traditionally challenging scans with long spans, like full arch implant restorations or even edentulous areas. The amount of data and tissue it can capture is outstanding, making what was once a challenge, an easy, fast, and comfortable procedure for me, my team, and my patients.”
The new iTero Lumina™ Pro system includes Near Infra-Red Imaging (NIRI) technology, which aids in the detection of interproximal caries above the gingiva. This advanced imaging system is intended to improve diagnostic capabilities and patient care, enhancing the ability to catch early signs of decay that might otherwise go unnoticed.
Align Technology’s iTero Lumina™ solutions allow for the capture of multiple dental case types — from single-unit crowns to full-arch restorations — in a single scan, helping to reduce the need for multiple patient visits. The scanners provide up to five capabilities in one device, including photorealistic 3D models, HD intraoral camera, interproximal caries detection with NIRI, and the ability to streamline lab communications and collaboration.
With the addition of restorative capabilities, the iTero Lumina™ solutions also offer enhanced clinical accuracy, allowing for predictable, repeatable first-time restoration fits. These updates are expected to support faster turnaround times for restorations, including removable prosthetics, thanks to superior full-jaw accuracy that rivals the precision of photogrammetry, the gold standard for prosthetic planning.
The new capabilities are designed to simplify practice workflows, reduce chair time, and improve patient experiences. Align Technology plans to release the software updates, which will include restorative and diagnostic capabilities (without NIRI), to current iTero Lumina™ scanner users starting in April 2025.
The iTero Lumina™ Pro dental imaging system is already commercially available in select regions, including the United States, Canada, and several countries across Europe, Asia, and Oceania. The iTero Lumina™ scanners are also available in various configurations globally, with further expansions expected in 2025, pending regulatory approvals.
