The American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA) has announced that nominations are now open for the Ann Battrell Visionary Legacy Award. This award, introduced in 2023, honors the lifetime achievements of dental hygiene professionals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership and innovation throughout their careers. The 2024 recipient was Maria Perno Goldie, RDH, MS, FADHA.
The award is named after Ann Battrell, MSDH, who served as the CEO of ADHA until her passing in June 2023. Battrell’s career was marked by significant contributions to the dental hygiene profession. She was the first registered dental hygienist and former ADHA president to hold the CEO position. Beginning her ADHA career in 2000, Battrell held several key positions, including director of education and executive director, before being named CEO in 2016. Throughout her tenure, Battrell worked to advance the scope of practice for dental hygienists, promote access to care, and advocate for equity and inclusion in the field.
The award reflects Battrell’s commitment to the profession and aims to encourage the development of future leaders who can carry on her legacy. The recipient of the Ann Battrell Visionary Legacy Award will be someone who exemplifies core values such as respect, trust, integrity, diversity, and inclusion, while making substantial contributions to the advancement of the dental hygiene profession.
Candidates for the award must meet specific criteria, including having a minimum of two years of continuous ADHA membership and being a currently registered dental hygienist. Eligible candidates must also show notable contributions in one or more of the following areas: patient care, dental hygiene education, research, community service, or publication.
Nominations are being accepted through a formal application process that includes a self-nomination letter, a letter of recommendation, and a current CV. The award package includes a cash prize, an engraved crystal award, a complimentary registration to ADHA’s Prevention Pro event, and recognition on the ADHA website and social media platforms.
