IDH: How can loupes provide ergonomic benefit?
Rubino: With direct-vision loupes, proper positioning of the scope is essential. It's necessary for both the scope height within the shield and the drill angle (angle of declination) to be customized for each user, allowing a steeper scope angle that minimizes neck flexion. Ergonomic or prismatic loupes have a learning curve, as they encourage users to work with an approach similar to an operating microscope. These "ergo loupes" provide substantial ergonomic advantages by eliminating neck flexion, though they also require more indirect vision. In my opinion, indirect vision is a skill that should be utilized most often regardless of what type of loupe you choose.
IDH:Why is getting comfortable with indirect vision so important?
Rubino: Utilizing indirect vision allows for a more stable base of support with less movement around the patient. This reduces the chance of getting into awkward positions like excessive bending at the hips to see inside the patient's mouth.
IDH:When it comes to selecting loupes, what are some of the key features to look for?
Rubino: Consider magnification, weight, field of view, depth of field, ease of disinfection, warranty, and customer support.
