Inside Dental Hygiene (IDH):What are the latest developments in toothbrush features that you feel can be most impactful?
Jill Meyer-Lippert, RDH: The technology with many of the new "smart brushes" is just amazing! Many can be connected to an app on your phone to track brushing habits. Some include "smart screens" that provide visual feedback and cues. These are great motivational tools for both adult and pediatric patients and provide parents with an elevated opportunity to monitor their children's oral hygiene.
IDH: What new types of rinses are catching your eye?
Meyer-Lippert: There seems to be a shift taking place in the mindset surrounding products in general. Throughout my many years as a hygienist, there was mainly a focus on "killing germs," but when products are killing harmful bacteria they are often also killing healthy bacteria that are necessary for oral health. I like that there are more products being introduced to support a diverse and healthier oral microbiome and believe that this will continue to be an area of growth in the market.
IDH:When do you recommend a rinse to patients?
Meyer-Lippert: My main concern with product recommendations is to always treat each patient as an individual and only make recommendations according to their specific needs. There truly is no one-size-fits-all solution. Does this patient suffer from dry mouth? Is it a teenager completing orthodontics? Or someone suffering from a condition like burning mouth syndrome? There are rinses that are great choices for one of these situations but not the others.
